The Danube Foundation organizes workshops in cities all over Europe to capture the dreams of young Europeans. These dreams are captured in Utopian Cities created by the workshop participants, which can be found on this website. The Utopia project, where we want to explore how Utopian ideas can have a role in creating visions for Europe. Utopia had become a thoroughly discredited idea after the totalitarianism of the 20th century, but today we want to explore if there might not still be a role for this type of thought.Because we are convinced that Europe needs new ideas and new ideals in order to overcome its problems and the nationalist and xenophobic, or nostalgic sentiments surging all over Europe. However, it is not clear what these new ideas should consist of, or where we should look for them. We want to explore the function of Utopian thought in this quest. Utopia serves as an ideal society but also a critique of current society (We want to consider whether or not an unattainable ideal is necessary for a convincing and inspiring vision for society. Visions so strong they enable a 'imagined community, so strong it gives meaning to Europe again. And if this is not desirable or will not work, what is the alternative?
