Presented by the Danube Foundation in co-operation with the European Alternatives Transeuropa Festival and ReKult.
Since far right populism is on the rise in various European countries promoting anti immigrant and nationalist sentiment, Danube feels it is necessary to develop a counter narrative to this idea, and take a closer look on the imagery and concepts that populist movements apply.
How can we convince, inspire, counter this story which excludes and discriminates? By presenting an appealing alternative, and by telling the story which relates to people’s hopes and desires. We will use imagery, visuals, exaggerate and impress. In order to counter the powerful imageof the ‘dangerous other’, we need to come up with something even more appealing, which connects to people’s desires instead of fears.
Positive Populism almost seems to be a contradiction in termini, yet lessons can be learnt from populist imagery. What are recurring themes, how do they differ from traditional parties and what imagery is used? Populist imagery contains appealing elements, otherwise it would not work. How can we use the tools of populism, and turn them into instruments for something positive and constructive, advocating a society that will be inclusive rather than exclusive? Participants are stimulated to reflect and create their own grand narrative/imagery via zines, short magazines.
A lecture on positive populism will be given by Danubian Jan ter Burg and journalist Eefje Blankevoort. Is populism bad by definition, can we learn something from it? If so, how? With the aid of ReKult participants will explore and create new visions by making Zines.
